Benefits of WFH (Work From Home)

When I was in college, I used to write SEO - driven website content for lifestyle brands. That kind of content - that exact job - it's no longer around in the same format!

Skills that I learnt in school and college and what I thought prepared me for my career journey - most of those skills went obsolete in five years.

Looking back, I have pivoted my career thrice:

- Started off as an Assistant Professor

- Ventured into freelance communication trainings

- Currently loving the corporate setup in marketing teams

To top it all, since 2016, I have been creating videos and writing articles on multiple social platforms. This 'side hustle' has opened up the door of two TEDx talks for me and even helped in finding a dream job.

The world of work has changed and it is high time we accept and evolve beyond the 'Sharma Ji ka beta/ beti/ the engineer, doctor, MBA' stereotypes of thriving career options.

1. Rise of the Creator - Led 'Passion Economy':

Author Adam Davidson's amazing book - 'The Passion Economy: The New Rules for Thriving in the Twenty-First Century' coins this phrase. What does it mean?

It means we will all find a way to monetize our passion project/ side hustle as an alternate source of income.

With the acceptance and financial support being given to creators for their unique content niches, people are starting product and service-led businesses using their content and community - via #personalbranding

2. Flexibility of work times:

Thanks to the pandemic, work from home started. It has metamorphosed into the productive hybrid work format. As technology advances, the hybrid mode of work will allow flexibility of work schedules.

People won't have to choose between work and family - they will work it out in sync.

We may also see the 4-day workweek idea thrive and grow in adoption.

3. Career Pivots & Phases:

You could study to be a CA - practice as one - then decide to teach MBA students and start a YouTube channel teaching finance basics and about the stock market. This is the story of CA Rachana Phadke Ranade - who was featured in YouTube Spotlight in 'Creating For India' for simplifying financial education.

We will no longer stick to a 30 - 40 year career plan. Rather, career pivots will happen every decade or so, as skills and interests change.

This is especially encouraging for women who may end up taking a career break for maternity or elderly care and want to start afresh by upskilling in a new domain.

Creator economy, flexible work schedules and career pivots - this is my work prediction.
